Our Woodbury cosmetic dentists perform a wide range of procedures, including dental extractions and dental implants. If you are considering a dental implant procedure, schedule an appointment with our office. Not all patients are eligible for implants, and you should avoid practices that offer them without qualifying their suitability for your particular situation.
What are Dental Implants?
- Dental Implants are an alternative to dentures or bridge work for replacing teeth.
- The dental implant is made from titanium and is surgically implanted in the jaw bone.
- The implant functions like the root of your missing tooth.
Following placement, dental implants require 4-6 months to allow for osseointegration (fusion of patient’s bone and titanium implant). All post-op instructions are provided to our patient’s following implant placement. An impression is then taken and an abutment and implant crown are fabricated. The abutment is screwed down to the titanium implant and the crown is then fixed to the abutment completing the restoration.
At Rubenstein Dental Group we have an in-house Periodontist, Dr. Goldwasser, who has been with our practice for twenty years and holds an implant success rate of 99%. Dr. Goldwasser will evaluate the various factors to determine if you are a candidate for dental implants. Those factors may include certain health conditions (e.g. uncontrolled diabetes) or risk factors (e.g. smoking). These types of conditions may not rule out dental implants, but they must be taken into consideration to be sure they will not compromise successful implant therapy.
One important factor affecting implant therapy is the density of your jaw bone, which can vary in density from very dense (ideal) to very porous or spongy. Less-than-ideal bone density does not necessarily prevent having dental implants as bone grafting may be an option. Patients typically will undergo a CT scan to measure their bone density so a proper treatment plan for implant placement can be finalized.
Adequate oral hygiene should be established prior to implant therapy and must be maintained to ensure the long-term health of dental implants. Many special brushes, flosses, and rinses are available to help you maintain your implant restoration. Similarly, continued regular hygiene visits to our office are just as important to the continuing health of your implants.
